It’s The Beautiful Music That Matters
They asked me or was it an interrogation?
“Why do you sing in
a foreign language?”
“Were we singing in the Indonesian language you also almost
can’t catch the words, while I am unable to translate into good Indonesian,
suitable for singing.”
“Why do you sing love songs?”
“They are so beautiful. In the bible there are love songs
of Solomon, but never preached.”
“Why do you sometimes sing without words?”
“That’s vocalised singing. Isn’t it the same as hearing the
organ, piano, an orchestra playing?
“Why do you sing a
song of an opera, folk song, ...?
“I can show you many beautiful songs, aria’s that are now
religious, or sacred songs.”
Our church is more tolerant now. While I was once fired,
I’m lucky, I’m not fired for having such – some said “shameful”, “irreverend” -
thoughts. Ha. Ha. It’s the beautiful music that matters. That’s why. I don’t
care about the words, the language. And I thought of the beautiful flowers on
the pulpit also singing without sounds.
Music speaks a universal language, more than words ever
could express, you know?
That’s my philosophy said my Choir Conductor of a little
church in Jakarta.
