Except My Lover Is With Me

Except My Lover Is With Me

“What do I care of visits when I’m sick? Except my lover is with me. Can’t you feel, understand? I.e. as long as you don’t become an awful, dutiful wife, you stupid little fool. Ha. Ha.” So said Opa Johan.

Don’t You Be Tempted

Don’t You Be Tempted

I’m grateful I can publish in Wordpress, Blogger, You Tube – broadcast yourself,  said You Tube -, for free, N.B. immediately published as I uploaded it. I don’t have to wait, to worry about the outcome, were I to publish them to a famous magazine, journal, ...

When by chance they offered me a place it were just in an almost unnoticed corner. Like having a tiny corner in a famous, huge building, for which I should be grateful, Ha. Ha. While I have my dear home page, sure, a very humble home page, but for me alone, with all  my riches, my thoughts, feelings,  pictures, videos, for free and for anyone to see, to hear.

“Besides, your writings, thoughts wouldn’t become the greater were it published in honorable magazines, read  by the whole world, kings, presidents and even God. Don’t you be tempted, fooled.” So advised my ‘Pacar’ (lover) me.

It’s The Beautiful Music That Matters

It’s The Beautiful Music That Matters

They asked me or was it an interrogation?

“Why  do you sing in a foreign language?”

“Were we singing in the Indonesian language you also almost can’t catch the words, while I am unable to translate into good Indonesian, suitable for singing.”

“Why do you sing love songs?”

“They are so beautiful. In the bible there are love songs of Solomon, but never preached.”

“Why do you sometimes sing without words?”

“That’s vocalised singing. Isn’t it the same as hearing the organ, piano, an orchestra playing?

“Why do you sing  a song of an opera, folk song, ...?

“I can show you many beautiful songs, aria’s that are now religious, or sacred songs.”

Our church is more tolerant now. While I was once fired, I’m lucky, I’m not fired for having such – some said “shameful”, “irreverend” - thoughts. Ha. Ha. It’s the beautiful music that matters. That’s why. I don’t care about the words, the language. And I thought of the beautiful flowers on the pulpit also singing without sounds.

Music speaks a universal language, more than words ever could express, you know?

That’s my philosophy said my Choir Conductor of a little church in Jakarta.

Forcing A Good Custom Is Good

Forcing  A Good Custom Is Good

I always thought that freedom was best. Yet, I believe, forcing a good custom, a good rule,  is good.

Forcing your family eating together, yet I’d rather like that it was done freely, willingly without being forced. And I thought of the happiness of a mother chicken and her baby chicks following her, eating together, sleeping together under her wings.

Rules forcing us driving left, or right, to come or leave on time, regularly, ... What were it free, do, act as you like? Then it occurred to me that it would be chaos.

I'm So Lucky

I’m So Lucky

They took me as a choir conductor of their little church though an amateur, while I’ve no authority in conducting.

I searched for the most beautiful songs, music. I’ve not just heard it, them, not only once, twice, but enjoyed, hundred times exercizing and singing it, though very difficult, with old untrained, not educated singers. We just have an electronic organ to accompany us.  But I’ve no fear, am not scared were it not perfect and NB I don’t care, am not ashamed to have our concerts in our little church, that I recorded it just with a pocket digital camera, an i Pad, ... and uploaded it in You Tube.

Otherwise, how could I ever know, enjoy such difficult pieces as the “Requiem” of Mozart, “Bess, you is my woman now” of Gershwin, “Ruht Wohl” of Bach, “Sei Nun Gnadig” of Haydn,...

Imagine, I enjoy Diana Krall, “When I Look in your eyes”, love songs of Schumann, “Mein Schoner Stern”, songs of Schubert, ... with deeper, intenser feelings than my son. I think,  I’m younger than he is though I’m over 80 by now.

Could I have a gamelan and its music score, would I also eagerly learn and play it. Why don’t they invent the electronic gamelan, then could I, anyone play it without having a gamelan set and musicians. I would learn to compose when I stop conducting my choir.

I’m so lucky. Were I just a frequent, dedicated concert visitor, could I never have enjoyed, known, developed my knowledge about music and come this far, know this much.

How rich, grateful am I, though, for so short a time as life. A thousand years wouldn’t be enough to learn, to know, enjoy all that, what I desired, wished.

So mused the Choir Conductor.

Note

Here are some recordings. Don’t listen - if you’re a professional or an educated singer -, except you’re also an amateur choir singer:

Listen to just one in order not to be satiate. Remember, we are old agers, amateurs.

Wouldn’t You Believe It?

Wouldn’t You Believe It?

Writing something nice is a joy. But I‘m very reluctant to write something awful, hateful. Shutting my mouth, hiding my thoughts, it’s torture, I can’t sleep.

There was someone – was it a professor? - who did a scientific research into the intelligence of the human races. He discovered, proclaims that a certain race has the lowest intelligence. Scientifically proved. What, were it the white, the ... race? Wouldn’t you believe it?

What an offence, affront, dishonor, shame, when you are of this race.

“I take it with a grain of salt. Ha. Ha.” Said Pak Arif. “There’s no professor, man with a bit of human feeling, sense, reason ever would make similar researches: the race with the lowest intelligence, the poorest in appearance, most lacking in courage, the most deceitful race, ...”

Why rank, unless, except, you, we ourselves want to compete as in sports, music festivals, beauty contests, ...? How would you feel were you ranked lowest as the girl with a poor appearance  in your class?
